Chen’s House, also known as the old site of the Chenxian Soviet Government, is located at No.35, Xingzhong Street, Chenzhou City. It was built in the late Qing Dynasty by Chen’s Family in Chenzhou. It’s a typical southern Hunan style building with a brick and wood structure and a construction area of 728 square meters.
In 2018, the local government of Chenzhou restored the old site as it was and opened it to the public free of charge. It’s rated as a provincial cultural relics protection unit in 2011 and a key national cultural relics protection unit in 2013.
On February 2, 1928, Zhu De and Chen Yi led the first division of the revolutionary army of workers and peasants to Chenxian County, an important town in southern Hunan, and occupied it on February 4. On February 7, Chenxian Soviet Government was established, with Li Caijia serving as the president.
The Soviet Government was relocated from the gospel hall to Dongshan Academy and then to Chen’s House after a counter-revolutionary riot on March 12. After the establishment of the Chenxian Soviet Government, Chenxian County quickly launched Soviet movements in its urban and rural areas.
